FORMULA STUDENT CZECH REPUBLIC PROUDLY PRESENTS

THE BEER CRATE RACING COMPETITION

Grab a beer crate, slap some wheels on it, and prove which team has the best
(or worst) engineering skills when it actually doesn’t matter.

what is this madness

THE MOST RIDICULOUS SIDE COMPETITION OF THE SEASON

We all know the Formula Student season is intense — endless hours in the workshop, last-minute fixes, and way too many energy drinks. But there are always those moments when you’re just standing around, waiting for something to happen. That’s where this beast of a competition comes in.

We figured: why not give all that wasted potential something fun to do? So we’re bringing you beer crate racing. Expect wild designs, epic wipeouts, crazy aerodynamic packages, shining lights, and way too much competitive spirit for something this dumb.

Whether you’re here to win, to crash spectacularly, or just to laugh with your friends — get building, get racing, and let’s see who is the true Yeast Beast.

Yeast Beast is a completely voluntary event, scheduled for one of the evenings during the competition week — because the real engineering happens after dark.

the rulebook highlights

fewer rules, more chaos

01

IT MUST FIT IN THE CRATE

The entire powertrain, including wheels, must fit within a standardized beer crate (400 × 300 mm). Height may vary by manufacturer.

02

POWER LIMITS

Maximum 60V and 2 kW motor/engine power. Off-the-shelf powertrains are allowed — scooters, hoverboards, you name it.

03

KEEP IT UNDER 90 DB

Your racing crate must not exceed 90 dB. Save the noise for the cheering crowd.

04

SOLO DRIVER

Only the team’s driver may be on the track during the race and must start the crate themselves.

05

HELMET REQUIRED

Protective helmet is mandatory. Customization with lights, wraps, speakers, or wings is strongly encouraged.

06

THIS SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA SHEET

Each team must submit a design document outlining their technical concept and construction choices prior to the competition.

07

GOOD ENGINEERING PRACTICE

the battleground

cone track

Held on a hard surface — tarmac or road. Approximately 200 metres of pure chaos

COMPETITION FORMAT

HOW WE CROWN THE BEAST

KNOCKOUT BRACKET

Final standings are decided in a knockout bracket. Each team gets one lap (~200 m). Two drivers from opposing teams race head-to-head simultaneously. The running order is announced before the competition.

⚔️ HEAD TO HEAD RACING

BEAUTY & THE YEAST AWARD

A separate award for the most creative and ridiculous design. Judging is subjective and heavily favors wild aerodynamic packages, excessive lighting, and thematic driver attire.

✨ STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE

PRE – RACE SUBMISSION

“THIS SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA”

Before the competition, each team must submit their design document — a brief engineering overview of your crate’s technical concept, powertrain choice, and construction approach. Think of it as a design report, except the whole point is bad ideas.
